So much for an easy holiday parked on the couch. This time half the class was visitors and they looked like they came ready to play. In our never ending quest to crank the output level up to 11 (you have to say it with a British rockstar accent…. eeeeeeleehven), we went for short bursts of unadulterated "go" juice in the form of 100 meter sprints. The class practicaly begged me to let them run the full 200 meters but, after much protestation on my part, they finally agreed to content themselves with a mere 100 meter run. "Jack, at least let us run uphill, please!", they screamed. -sigh- What could I do? They wouldn't take "no" for an answer. I grudgingly caved in.
Runners paired up and ran each round, then walked back and rested. Rebecca and Lindy went first. I needed someone to give Rebster a run for her money and Lindy was clearly the right girl for the job. She laid down a blistering time that Rebecca couldn't quite match. The next round, they both dropped a full second off their times.
Susan and Laurie were next. Susan was the stronger runner here but the biggest difference was mental toughness. Every round Susan kept running through the trap while Laurie trailed off by the finish line. After round three, Susan's leg forced her to join the rowers.
Mark and Jim ran a few good heats. Their first round looked like a warmup compared to the times they laid round in round 2. Jim cut 2 second off his first time while Mark dropped a stunning 3 seconds off his first time then proceeded to keep that pace up for another round.
Jamie and Emily ran well but Jamie seemed to have Emily's number from the word "go" (I wonder if there was taunting and headgames or just the steely gaze in her eyes). Both of their times stayed consistent all the way to the end. Emily had a tendency to admit defeat a little early. She might not know it, but she's got at least a full second in the tank any time she decides to dig deep. It's in there, just waiting for her to call on it.
Cindy and Anne sub'ed the row for the run. I wish I could have gotten to follow them more closely because their times kept dropping the entire workout! We might have finally found somone who can push Cindy. Next time, I'm buying tickets for a front row seat to this competition. Considering how well these two did, I say we crank up the distance to 250 meters on the row and give everyone a shot at the title.
I do have to make a special mention of Mark and Susan. Both of these athletes have really turned it up a notch. Running clean through the finish line and into the "I'm about to puke zone". This was exactly the effort we were trying to achieve with the sprints and these two stepped up to the plate massively. As for Lindy, she might not be a regular but that girl's got some motor.
