Man, what a ball-buster today. This looks like a fairly easy workout but once you get to the burpees you know you're in for something special. Generating power for the deadlifts gets kinda hard when you're completely out of breath.
In order to maintain form the athletes paired up. One person did the workout, start to finish, while the other coached. I'm going to paraphrase Rippetoe here but the idea is that sloppy form is the result of insufficient yelling. We warmed up, everybody got an idea of what to look for and agreed on the cues. Susan decided to take a few minutes to argue about how much weight she was going to do (this is how I know she's paying attention) and we got set to go. Everyone got to work with roughly 55%-60% 1RM.
Camilo, Mark, Tyler and Jess went first. Amazingly everybody's form was actually better during the WOD than during warmup. Camilo started rounding his back a little but a few yelps from Jordan and I fixed that tout de suite. Tyler struggled with the deadlifts but she just kept doing them, he form didn't waiver much but she did seem to favor her left leg . Jess didn't seem to have a problem, she even managed to catch some air on the burpees. I don't think her form ever looked better. The real standount was Mark. Sure I had to kep yelling at him to finish the full, yes I had to mention for him to open his hips more at the top, but this man worked. I mean, he REALLY worked. This was an epic effort the likes of which I haven't seen from him yet. Some came close to this level, but Mark raised the bar today. He gets the gold star of the day.
Jordan, Cindy, Dylan and Susan went next. Jordan seemed to struggle but her time and pace was just fine. She always looks miserable but keep improving every time (I seriously think it's an act to keep me from giving her more weight, fortunately it's not going to work). Cindy found her pace and stuck with it. She knew exactly what the deadlifts we supposed to look like and replicated that form every single rep. Dylan moved a good chunk of weight, about 20# more than anyone else, but I think he might have had a little more left in him. He may hate burpees, but they love him. In the end, I think the burpees will win him over. Fortunately, he's got the strength for it. Susan, for all her pre WOD complaining, just machined through the entire workout. Seriously… why do I even indulge her? Everybody knows she's got the juice to move those weights like a rockstar.
In short, this workout really, really sucked. It was hard, it was miserable and it was heavy. You want to know the best part? Everyone stepped up and brought their game. Good job people.
